Cognitive scientist at Johns Hopkins — author of the most complete theoretical framework for connectionist cognitive science

Smolensky (1988) replied directly to the Fodor & Pylyshyn symbolist critique by proposing the subconceptual level: connectionism operates between the neurobiological level and the symbolic/conceptual level, with symbolic rules as an approximate macroscopic description of subconceptual dynamics — not a literal description of underlying mechanisms. This is one of the most important target articles in the history of cognitive science (with 40+ peer commentaries).
