James Woodward

Philosopher of science at the University of Pittsburgh — principal architect of the interventionist theory of causation

In Making Things Happen (2003), Woodward laid out a systematic interventionist framework: X has a direct causal effect on Y iff there is an intervention on X that, holding other variables fixed, changes Y. Its key property — non-reductive but non-circular: defining X–Y influence only invokes relations among variables other than X and Y. Compared with counterfactual semantics, interventionist semantics track scientific practice more closely.

Core interventionist framework
Four conditions on an intervention variable
A precise characterization of a “surgical” intervention — affects Y only via X, not through any other path
Non-reductive, non-circular
Defining X–Y influence via influence among other variables yields an acyclic network of definitions
Type-level focus
Primarily analyzes the general relation “X influences Y” — well suited to causal reasoning in scientific practice
Modularity (with Hausman)
Each structural equation can be independently broken by intervention — guaranteeing the feasibility and locality of interventions
Relations to other theorists
Parallel to Pearl
Independently developed an intervention-based formal framework, strongly complementary to Pearl’s do-calculus
Alternative to Lewis
Interventionist semantics replaces Lewis’s possible-world semantics — closer to the operational concepts of experimental science

  • Judea Pearl:
