Google initiated the A2A protocol, led its development in 2024, and then donated it to the Linux Foundation for neutral governance — keeping the protocol out of any single vendor’s hands, inviting broad participation, and aiming to make A2A a true industry standard rather than a Google-proprietary one. This is the canonical path for open-protocol evolution (cf. Kubernetes moving from Google-internal to CNCF stewardship).
