Mathematician, founder of fractal geometry — builder of the right mathematical language for nature’s irregular forms

Mandelbrot’s core insight: Euclidean geometry cannot describe most of nature’s shapes — “clouds are not spheres, mountains are not cones, coastlines are not circles”. He did not start from abstract mathematics in search of applications, but started from nature’s irregular phenomena and built the right mathematical language for them. In 1975 he coined “fractal” (from Latin fractus, “broken” or “irregular”), establishing a new mathematical branch for describing nature’s irregular forms.
