Aristotle

384–322 BCE — founder of Western scientific methodology, creator of the theory of causality

Natural philosophers before Aristotle lacked a systematic theory of causality itself. Aristotle’s metaphor: they were like boxers without boxing technique — occasionally landing a good punch, but only by luck. His core methodological principle: “We have knowledge of a thing only when we have grasped its cause” — knowledge is causal knowledge, and understanding means being able to answer “why”.
